Building the city of the future has been a challenge for most urban town planners and governments. How does the city of the future define itself without making the same mistakes as the old? Today, with the rapid urbanisation being witnessed across the world, building cities that achieve its objective of balancing citizen friendliness and environmental sustainability is a question that many city governments are grappling with.

The United Nations predicts a doubling of urban population by the year 2050. Today, 10% of the world’s population lives in the top 30 cities. And cities consume 60% of the world’s energy production. This disproportionate consumption of both physical and social resources will soon become unsustainable.

One of the ways that the world is trying to solve the issue is through the concept of a “Smart City”. A city where there is harmony between quality of life and consumption of resources, a balance between the past and the future. And leading this drive are the two largest economies of the world, China and India. There are currently close to 300 Smart City pilots being undertaken in just these two countries. This is more relevant for emerging economies in Africa and South East Asia, which are witnessing large migration of population from rural to urban areas in search of employment and better opportunities.

Managing these cities of the future requires an entirely different approach to how a city is governed. The city, its citizens, administrators and heritage, all need to be bound by a common goal and shared objectives. A Smart City uses ICT to build engagement with citizens, provide easy to access city services and enhance urban systems. It should enhance and optimise quality of life for its citizens through technology that provides a secure way of managing data, optimising transportation and making the city secure and safe. This is done by building systems that leverage the concept of IoT through various devices like sensors, communication infrastructure, gateways and servers.
